Of Fire and Floods

June 23rd, 2012. The Waldo Canyon forest fire began four miles northwest of Colorado Springs. A blaze that would not be fully contained for 17 days, the Waldo Canyon fire covered over 18,000 acres and claimed 346 homes and two lives. Hundreds more homes were damaged by fire and smoke. It was the most destructive wildfire in Colorado history to that point, only to be outdone by the Black Forest Fire, which started nearly a year later on June 11th, 2013.

The Black Forest Fire consumed 486 homes and damaged 28 more. Contained nine days later, the Black Forest fire burned over 14,000 acres and killed two people.

Record setting heat and intense draught played an important role in the massive spread of Colorado’s back-to-back fires, and though we’re experiencing the wettest spring ever in Colorado Springs, fire danger and restrictions can change rapidly. As the summer heat increases, wild land fires may yet threaten people and property across Colorado.

Restoration King encourages fire safety at all times, and especially during the summer months and over the July 4th holiday. Independence Day should be commemorated with “Pomp and parade, with shows, games…and illuminations from one end of this Continent to the other from this time forward forever more,” John Adams said. But careful observance of fire safety rules and any fire bans should be the standard by which we operate – always.

Restoration King wishes you and yours a safe and joyous summer! But if your home or office should be damaged by fire, call us in Colorado Springs at 719-282-0997, or in Denver at 720-469-0623. From claim adjustment to cleanup and rebuild, we are your local fire and smoke damage experts.
